Toxic Thoughts

Toxic thoughts.  They are usually directed at ourselves and cause long term damage to our health, our relationships and even our financial well being, and this is why.

Seventy five to ninety five percent of chronic illness is a direct result of how we think.  The average person has over 30,000 thoughts per day.  Eighty-two to ninety percent of these thoughts are negative and repeat day after day.   Thoughts affect our mood and generate emotions.  Negative emotions usually create internal stress.  Stress is just another word for fear and triggers more than 1,400 known physical and chemical responses in the body and activates more than 30 different hormones.  The chemical responses increase the body’s acidity which results in inflammation.  Inflammation is a factor in almost every chronic illness including cancer, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune diseases.  Depression is linked to chronic negative thoughts and chemical imbalances.

Negative EmotionsNot  only that, but toxic thoughts affect relationships.  If your spouse or significant other talks to someone you feel is a threat to your relationship, personal insecurities may surface and you may feel jealousy or fear.  You may even take this out on your loved one in the form of anger.  Your child may not be achieving the grades or the athletic prowess you expect of them so you criticize or shame them to get them to do better.  Or you may want to have companionship in your life but the thought of the time you would have to devote to the relationship and the lifestyle adjustments you may need to make keeps you isolated and stuck in your own comfort zone.

And then there is money.  “Money is the root of all evil.” “The bigger they are the harder they fall.”  The harder I work, the more I will earn.”  How many of these sayings have you heard over the years?  How true are they for you?   Toxic thoughts about money can paralyze our earning capabilities or cause us to lose money when we acquire a certain level.  This can be from a bad investment, job loss, a major home repair or medical expense.

If thoughts can make us sick and sabotage relationship and financial well being, then they can also make us healthy, wealthy and happy.

Toxic thoughts include:Shoulda, coulda, woulda

  1. Should have, could have would have.
  2. If only …
  3. Making comments like “I’m so stupid”, “nothing ever goes right for me” or “everything I touch fails”?
  4. Replaying a conversation or situation in your mind that caused you pain or worrying over something that hasn’t even happened yet.
  5. Forming a personal identity around a disease and talking about it like “my arthritis” or “my hip pain”.
  6. Thinking negative thoughts about yourself like “I’m too fat be in a relationship.” “I’m not smart enough to get the promotion I want.” “I hate my hair/nose/butt/ freckles/_______.”

These toxic thoughts actually stem from beliefs about ourselves and life in general that were created  at an early age.  “I’m not good enough.”  “I am unlovable.”  “What’s wrong with me.”  We carry all of this emotional baggage around with us every day of our lives and they affect the 30,000 thoughts and  decisions we make daily.

Neural Connections in the Brain

When we think a thought a neural connection is made in the brain.  The more we think that thought, it becomes a belief which is repeated over and over again resulting in more and more neural connections that eventually create a neural bundle.  But when we change our thoughts and shift our beliefs these neural connections begin to disconnect and new connections are formed that correspond to the new thoughts.

So how do you take control of your thoughts?

You have the power to choose which thoughts will stay with you and which will not.  If you choose to accept it, it will stay in your mind and get stronger.  If you choose to reject it, the thought leaves and does not create that neural connection.  You can reject unhealthy thoughts simply by verbalizing “I won’t think about this anymore.”  There.  You’ve changed your mind and can decide to direct your energy to something more positive.

But first you have to be aware of your thoughts and that will take some effort considering that there are 30,000 of them a day that you need to monitor.  But, it isn’t as hard as you might think because now that you know what you need to be paying attention to, you will be more aware of them when they pop up.  It does take practice because you need to form the new habit of making a conscious effort to identify them and throw them out before they literally become lodged into your brain.

Journaling

Some ways to become aware of your thoughts are:

  1. Mindfulness – Focusing your thoughts on the present moment and redirecting your mind back to positive thoughts if it begins to wander.
  2. Journaling – When you identify a toxic thought, jot it down in a journal or use a list app on your phone. Make notes as to how often you find yourself thinking that way.

Once you have gotten into the habit of recognizing toxic thoughts then you can take action to change this destructive habit.

Look over the list, figure out where they may have come from and write that down too.  Did someone say it to you when you were a child?  Did you have a teacher, coach or family member plant a toxic seed?

What emotions are tied to the thoughts?  Do you feel unworthy, guilty, angry, helpless, sad, shame, betrayed or unlovable?  Identify when was an earlier time that you felt that way and go back as far into your youth as you can remember.  Write all of this down.  This is the road map to why you think and act and react the way you do to the things others say and do.

You may be asking “Now what?”  What do I do with this information?

Well, psychotherapy has been the traditional way to address depression and to provide a dumping ground for all of the bad things that happen to us in life.  But, it can take years of sessions and talking about the same things over and over again for some to discover that true relief is elusive.  There is a better way and it is literally at your fingertips.

The marriage of traditional psychotherapy and holistic energy therapies created EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping as it is sometimes known.   It does exactly what it says:  It frees you from emotions that keep you stuck in unhealthy life patterns.

EFT will set you free.

EFT is a combination of talking about a life experience and the associated emotions while using your fingertips to gently tap on a series of acupuncture points on the face, hands and torso.  This combination does two things:

  1. The tapping releases the energy blockages that were created in the body during the life experience.

  1. The intensity of the negative emotions associated with the event are neutralized and the way you think of the event shifts from a negative perception of it being a threat or trauma to a different, positive perspective.  Fear can be replaced with calm and peace.  Feeling like you are a bad person shifts to feeling like you are a good person.   Remember the neural connections that are created when we have a thought or belief?  During this shift, the existing neural connections disconnect and new ones are formed as a result of the new thought patterns.

EFT is used by celebrities such as Jack Canfield, a world renowned success coach and author of many books including the bestseller, Chicken Soup for the Soul.  Author of bestselling books, Dr. Christiane Northrup also uses EFT personally and advocates it for her patients and followers.  And Kris Carr, cancer survivor and bestselling author of Crazy Sexy Kitchen, Crazy Sexy Diet and other books, also recommends and uses EFT.

Recognizing and getting control of your toxic, negative thoughts then releasing and shifting them with EFT can help get you out of life’s ruts.  As a Certified EFT Coach, I can help you out of those ruts and put you on the highway to vibrant health, fulfilling relationships and the financial security of your dreams.

Gadgets.  The world is full of them and maybe your home is too.  There is a gadget for just about anything you want to do from opening a jar lid to holding your cell phone in your car.

Gadgets might not be the best term to describe devices that will help you detox  because they are usually bigger than what you can fit in a kitchen drawer, but gadgets they are.

Foot Pads and BathsFoot baths

Recent popular gadgets to detox your body are adhesive foot pads or foot baths which claim to draw heavy metals out of your body.  But buyer beware.   There is a lot of controversy about these methods and most of what you will find about them involves scam.

Regarding the foot pads, the Mayo Clinic website states ” No scientific studies have been published that show that detox foot pads work or that they’re safe.”

Then there are foot baths which also claim to draw out heavy metals.  Supporters of them say that the electrical current in the water floods the body with “negative hydrogen ions” that neutralize free radicals which contribute to inflammation in the body.  And that the reddish brown water in the bath is the toxic matter removed from the body.

Opponents to the foot spas say that the color of the water changes due to a process called “electrolysis”.  The brown toxins are from the rust generated by the corrosion of the iron electrodes, not toxins from your body.

Individual treatments can be from $50 and up and machines for home use can cost you more than $1000.  So, don’t just buy based on the manufacturer’s claims but research their effectiveness thoroughly before spending your hard earned dollars.

Person relaxing in sauna.

Saunas

Saunas create a hot, dry environment which opens up your pores, relaxes your muscles and unleashes a cleansing wash of perspiration all over your body.  In other words, it makes you sweat – a lot – which is why it is such a great way to help detox.

Saunas are found in health spas around the globe and some people even have their own home versions.  There are two kinds of saunas.  One is the traditional Finnish which uses rocks arranged on and inside the heater to create a very even, consistent heat, ranging from 165 to 195 degrees.   This method heats the skin by convection and only three percent of the sweat produced is the body’s waste.  The recommended time to spend in this style sauna ranges from 10-20 minutes.

Then there is the Infrared sauna which uses heat and light to help relax and detoxify the body.  The temperature doesn’t exceed 130 degrees.  During the 15 to 20 minute sessions, the radiant heat penetrates the body creating heat and a profuse amount of sweat – two to three times more than a regular sauna.  Up to 20 percent of the sweat is toxic body waste.

Although safe for most people, precautions need to be taken such as making sure you are well hydrated; and for those with certain medical conditions, consulting with a medical professional before using a sauna is recommended.

Bentonite clay treatment

Clay

If you are a woman who has had a facial mask before, you may know about the ability of clay to draw out impurities in your skin.  Bentonite clay is derived from volcanic ash and touted to be the best for detoxing.  It can be taken internally, smeared all over your body as a mask or used in a soaking bath.

Clay is so wonderful at drawing toxins out of the body because of its negative electrical charge which binds to toxins like heavy metals and chemicals that have a positive charge.  The “opposites attract” law of physics springs into action as the clay, when moistened and applied externally,  binds to the toxins and pulls them  out of the body through the pores.

The best quality Bentonite clay is gray or cream in color.  It is recommended that you avoid white clay as it may be contaminated with metals which defeats the detoxing properties.  Which is also why you never want to store the clay in a metal container or use metal utensils to mix or apply it.

Detoxing with clay is an inexpensive and safe way to rid toxins from your body.

Body wrap treatment

Body Wraps

Another way that clay is used to detox is when combined with sea salts, seaweed, aloe vera and herbs  and slathered all over your body.  Then – this is the fun part – your whole body is encased in plastic wrap and sometimes a thermal blanket is added to heat you up and speed the toxins to your pores.  The advantage of this process is that you can’t move and have no other option than to lie back, close your eyes and relax.  So, if you have to be bound up to force yourself to stop and take a break, this may be the detox solution for you.

But seriously, all kidding aside, this method is not a deep detox treatment but more a way to improve the health and appearance of your skin by infusing it with the vitamins and minerals in the ingredients.  More effective methods involve detox dieting and cleanses.

Masssage

Massage

Okay, maybe hands aren’t considered to be gadgets, but they are devices with which you can detox.

Massage literally compresses muscles, fat and other tissues to help squeeze out toxins.  It also stimulates the lymphatic system to release stored fluids and microorganisms.  Massage perks up blood circulation by pushing oxygen and nutrients deep into body tissues and organs to encourage their optimal functioning.  The circulatory system then picks up the released toxins and transports them to the liver where they are filtered out and eliminated.

The relaxation  advantages of massage are enjoyed by both mind and body.  Being pampered for an hour on a warm, comfortable table with low light and soft, music while getting the kinks worked out of tense muscles is a life detox in itself.   When the mind and body relax, stress and inflammation are reduced and you’ll feel like you’ve embarked on a mini vacation.

Online Treatment for Food Cravings and Weight Management with EFT

by Christine Hunt

Food cravings are most likely the number one reason why people fall off the diet wagon and fail to lose weight.  It isn’t just the weight that suffers but also self esteem because the failure is taken personally and the dieter then feels like a failure.

As a Certified EFT Practitioner who works primarily with those who want to lose weight or find relief from chronic illness, I understand the connection of cravings and diet diversion. Eliminating the stress triggers that cause cravings is a large part of my focus when I work with clients who want to lose weight.  Without the cravings eating healthy meals comes easily and naturally.

Which is why I want to offer you an opportunity to participate in an 8 week online study for Food Cravings and Weight Management Using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques or Tapping).

Dr. Peta Stapleton of Bond University in Queensland, Australia is conducting the study and has worked extensively with EFT (Tapping) in helping people lose weight.

Here is more information about it.

Waitlist – Online Treatment for Food Cravings and Weight Management Using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) –

BUHREC Protocol Number: RO 15270

This research is being conducted to investigate whether food cravings play a role in the field of weight loss and if willpower over food cravings is important in weight loss. This study will offer an online treatment for food cravings through structured psychological techniques. Dr Stapleton is leading the study in her role within the Faculty of Society & Design, Bond University.

You will start this trial in 8 weeks time (after Easter 2016, likely mid-April)) and it will all be online. You will be asked to complete this survey here now, in 8 weeks AGAIN before you start, and at the end of the trial – as well as follow-up periods of 6- and 12-months.

The benefits of this study will include determining the most effective long-term treatment and delivery options for food cravings. When this is established it will form an invaluable component of future weight loss programs, as willpower over food cravings is often noted as a difficult issue when people try to lose weight.

You may read more about it and sign up for the study here.
