Have you ever felt a negative emotion – such as fear, anger, sadness or grief? Negative emotions create a stress response in your body. Everyday life creates stressors. You may feel like there is never enough time to get everything done. Therefore, you are constantly afraid of the consequences of forgetting something or not “getting around to it”. Sometimes if you don’t’ finish everything on your list, whether it is personal or work-related, there may be consequences that cost more money, or disappoints someone or makes you beat up on yourself for not being “good enough” or “capable enough” or you may feel like “something is wrong with me” because you can’t get it all done.
LIFE EVENTS AND PAIN
But life events that generate negative emotions can also cause physical symptoms such as pain.
Maybe you went through a difficult divorce years ago. You may have experienced anger, sadness, and a host of other emotions. You know it needed to happen and you are better off as a result, and now you feel like you are over it.
But during those trying times, your subconscious mind buried some very strong emotions without you realizing it, because that’s what the subconscious mind does – it takes over without us knowing about it.
Whether the emotions are from daily stressors or long-past life struggles, those repressed emotions cause tension in certain parts of your body such as your shoulders, neck, back or hips AND limit oxygen supply to your muscles. That reduced oxygen supply leads to muscle constriction, which spreads to nearby muscles. Over time, unless those muscles relax, you experience pain.
This constant stress is like holding a glass of water in your arm that is outstretched from your shoulder. You can hold onto it for a minute or two, no problem. Hold onto it for 5 minutes and your arm starts to feel uncomfortable – the muscles are straining. Hold onto it for 30 minutes and your muscles get really fatigued and start to hurt. Hold onto it for an hour and you may need medical care. This is what our bodies do with the constant levels of stress we experience.
BUT WHAT ABOUT PHYSICAL INJURIES
You may have a lingering pain from an injury and wonder how can emotions be related to it?
Injuries occur a variety of different ways from automobile accidents to sports, to home project accidents. Regardless, there are emotions associated with it and the negative ones cause stress.
Let’s say you had an automobile accident. You likely experienced fear, anger, sadness or feel hurt that it happened at the time. Later on, there may be feelings of embarrassment about what happened, fear of the pain from your injury not going away or anger towards the person that caused the accident. When you recall the different aspects of the accident and the emotions associated with them, can you feel the effects somewhere in your body? This is why emotions play such a huge role in locking in the physical pain of an accident.
Most of us have experienced automobile accidents in our lives. But the physical pain you are experiencing may be around a number of different events that have happened in your past or around one particularly traumatizing event. Everyone is different and everyone reacts differently to the variety of situations we find ourselves in.
In short, stress is based on our ancient ancestors’ need to survive life and death threats and traumas. Fear and other emotions are associated with them. In modern times most of us are not threatened in this way but any experience that is unexpected, shocking or surprising, that makes us feel limited or helpless in some way, and results in a negative emotional reaction, is traumatic and causes stress. You hold onto stress long enough and it can result in chronic pain.
A FINGERTIP SOLUTION
You may ask, what is this fingertip solution?

Increasing endorphin levels in the body help to provide pain relief. Acupuncture and potentially acupressure help to increase endorphin levels.
